Teach in China
Teach English in China
Michael Wills (UK)

Before joining WLE’s Teach in China program, I was certain about two things in my life: the first was that I needed to try something new, different and challenging outside of the UK for longer than just the length of an average holiday; the second was that I wanted to learn about Chinese culture and Chinese food. In other words, I wanted everything that I never had before, and in coming to China, I now have more than I had ever expected.

By being on this program, I’ve managed to not only travel around an amazing country and enjoy every new experience that presents itself, but I’ve also built a great rapport with many of my students. Through these students, I have been given true insight into what local Chinese people think about their own country and the direction that it’s headed.

Among all of the students I've taught, there has been some that have stuck out as people I'll never forget. Michael, for example, was a 12-year-old student who first came to me barely able to understand the questions I’d ask him. After six months of 1-on-1 English classes, Michael was able to play games, watch films, and talk about cartoons and ambitions with me in English. I found myself excited to attend upcoming lessons with him since he had made so much progress and was now able to engage in conversations and express himself accurately. As his teacher, I am very proud of his progress and have since learnt that his English tests scores at school have soared up to 98% and as a result he is top of the class.
